Los estudios sobre los mecanismos cerebrales que intervienen en la construcción de los recuerdos en los gatos coinciden en los rasgos de su memoria a corto plazo, no así en la de largo plazo. Se desconoce cómo se desenvuelve, pero sí se sabe que la memoria felina supera a la canina.
No existen diferencias entre los gatos domésticos y los salvajes. Para aprender y construir recuerdos se nutren de la observación y de la imitación. La relevancia vital, entendida como la utilidad que pueden extraer de esa información, hará el resto. Desde cachorros dedican sus primeras semanas de vida a observar a su madre para aprender de ella.
Lo recordarás cuando tratamos la edad con la que los mininos aprenden a cazar. Todo aquello que les resulta relevante para subsistir, por ejemplo, la ubicación del comedero, del bebedero o del arenero, así como las enseñanzas obtenidas por las experiencias vividas les sirven para discriminar qué es útil y, por ello, valioso para ser archivado en su cerebro.
En definitiva, las investigaciones, y tu experiencia como dueño de un gato, no dejan duda de que son capaces de aprender rápido y de recordar aquello a lo que pueden sacar rédito, por ejemplo, para evitar una situación de peligro en el futuro o para conseguir que juegues con él. Recuerdan aquello que les es relevante y que ya han probado.
